Maintaining Data Privacy in a New Era of Digitalism
As the years progress, our society becomes increasingly enthralled in the virtual world. We saw this become even more accelerated during the pandemic as most business sectors turned to remote work. As a result, data privacy and protection has become imperative.
Regulations like California’s CCPA (soon to be CPRA) and the EU’s GDPR were put in place to help protect consumers and allow people autonomy over who can and cannot use their information. In fact just in December, Twitter was penalized in Ireland for breaching GDPR compliance after a bug published many individual's private tweets to the public. Fines can reach up to 4% of the global annual revenue of a company if the offense is great enough.
Why Data Privacy is Important and What Organizations Can Do To Ensure They Protect Themselves and Their Customers
One of the biggest benefits to data privacy is ensuring the trust of the public. In turn, this has led many companies to create new positions solely dedicated to developing a strategy around consumer protection and privacy. The bottom line is people want to know the companies they utilize in their day to day life are protecting their data. This will only become more important as technology becomes intertwined with our day to day life in the workplace and at home.
